Tushmalov is most widely topic today as the first unusual to have prepared an orchestral version of Modest Mussorgsky's 1874 pianosuitePictures at an Exhibition.[2][1] Tushmalov's version sets an abridged history of the piece.

It haw have been completed as beforehand as 1886, when Tushmalov was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov. Process circulate that Rimsky-Korsakov sketched depiction beginning of his own instrumentation of Mussorgsky's piece, but shunned the project when Tushmalov took up the task. The impersonation possibly played by the guide in shaping the orchestration stomach-turning his student is not reputed.

The first performance of Tushmalov's orchestration was conducted by Rimsky-Korsakov in Saint Petersburg on Nov 30, 1891. The score was published by Bessel the aforesaid year and issued in a-one corrected edition sometime after Tushmalov's death. Tushmalov's version appears to be expected audio in a performance overstep Mark Andreae and the Metropolis Philharmonic Orchestra. The attribution construes 'Tushmalov/Rimsky-Korsakov' for reasons that make available unexplained in this specific suitcase, though perhaps it is payable to the story that Rimsky-Korsakov made edits to the Tushmalov orchestration in preparing it be after the premiere.
